February 16, 2014 — Today, the Government of West Bengal, India distributed land titles and micro-plots of land to 55,245 families living in extreme poverty. This week, that number of families reached is projected to reach 61,339. With this new land, and the secure legal rights to that land, these families now have one of the most vital assets to begin forging their way out of generations of poverty that landlessness had destined for them. They now have land of their own where they can live, work, grow food, and take control of their future. Today’s historic milestone brings Landesa closer to our mission of working with the state of West Bengal to bring 500,000 micro-plots of land to the rural poor. Our progress to date has reached more than 160,000 families.
