Landesa’s Law and Policy Practice Group Retreat, Morogoro, Tanzania, 2024

Landesa’s journey began over 40 years ago with a small group of lawyers working with policymakers on some of the most pivotal pro-poor land reforms of the modern era. These reforms changed the course of millions of lives and created lasting benefits for younger generations.

In 2025, Landesa’s experts continue to work closely with policymakers around the globe. As Landesa has grown, so has its capacity to offer the best international advisement on land and resource reforms based on its well-established country and regional programs. At the same time, the context and backdrop for land reforms have continued to evolve, necessitating fresh approaches and a heightened understanding of the interconnectedness with climate change and conservation, shifting global trends in resource extraction and use, and technological breakthroughs with the potential to revolutionize land governance and administration.

To meet these dynamic and evolving needs, Landesa has created a new permanent institution: the Law and Policy Practice Group (LPPG). The LPPG brings together Landesa’s global law and policy experts to address emerging challenges and new opportunities affecting land and related resources. The LPPG fields requests for legal and policy assistance from governments and others, working closely with Landesa’s geographic and cross-cutting programs to offer the best application of global practices for law and policy in each country’s unique context. The LPPG will also develop and share case studies, position papers, legal briefs, training curricula, and other materials to contribute value to the work of Landesa’s many global and regional partners.

With representation from six countries, the LPPG convened in person for the first time in October at a retreat focused on intensive knowledge sharing and the creation of the group’s 2025 action plan. Landesa is excited to start the new year with the LPPG in place and taking on assignments. The group welcomes inquiries, which can be sent to LPPG@landesa.org.
