Land rights are at the intersection of multiple global development, human rights and humanitarian challenges – and critically – they are foundational to solving some of the most pressing problems women face worldwide. As a leading land rights organization, Landesa has helped millions of women realize secure land rights, a foundational tool in helping women realize their full human rights and creating a gender-equal world.

Creating a Gender Equal World: The Transformative Power of Women’s Rights to Land
Secure land rights create pathways to prosperity and empower women economically and socially. Yet millions worldwide still encounter barriers to gender-equal land rights, constraining women from the full realization of their human rights. An expert panel will explore how women’s land rights are linked to other measures of gender equality: protection from gender based violence, food security, education, women and girls’ agency and empowerment in their homes and other pressing challenges women face worldwide, and discuss a new global advocacy campaign – Stand for Her Land – that aims to close the gap between law and practice to ensure women have access to their land rights, not only on paper, but in their daily lives. We’ll also preview an upcoming Sundance-funded documentary film featuring a community’s effort to empower women to realize their land rights in rural Kenya.
Speakers include Laurie Adams, CEO of Women for Women International, Dr. Monica Mhoja, Tanzania Program Director, Landesa, Esther Mwaura, Founder of GROOTS Kenya, Papa Seck, Chief Statistician of UN Women. Moderated by Chris Jochnick, CEO of Landesa.
Sunday, June 2, 6 – 8 pm, West Meeting Room 221, Vancouver Convention Center

Rural Women: Learning and Leading
One of the greatest challenges identified by rural women and their allies is gaining access to information in order to better understand the technical elements of policies. This session showcases how education, technology, and network building help women establish meaningful relationships with policymakers and exercise leadership. Panelists will highlight examples of how rural women have influenced the gender-equitable design and implementation of public policies, promoted gender equality, and spearheaded solutions to enhance overall community and environmental wellbeing. Moderated by Landesa Chief Program Officer Karol Boudreaux.
Tuesday, June 4, 1:30 – 2:30 pm, Room 212, Vancouver Convention Center
Integration Matters: Advancing the Lives of Girls and Women through Holistic Programming
The evidence is clear: investing in girls and women in one area has a ripple effect on others, for example investing in water and sanitation in schools may help girls stay in school longer, and learn more. However, working together and integrating programs across sectors is not always easy. In this session, participants will engage in a facilitated dialogue to gain inspiration and proof of why integration is worthwhile, how to keep results for girls and women at the center of their work. Landesa Center for Women’s Land Rights Program Manager Beth Roberts will speak.
Tuesday, June 4, 1:30 – 2:30 pm, Room 306, Vancouver Convention Center
The Real Groundbreakers: Women Food Producers Transforming Rural Landscapes
Rural women in developing countries are vital economic players in their communities. Many are food producers, crucial to their families’ health and nutrition, and are agents of change. But gender inequality holds them back. This event will explore the challenges women food producers face and will hear solutions from women who are championing gender equality, confronting injustice, and are helping to end hunger and malnutrition in their communities. These women are the real groundbreakers. Landesa Tanzania Program Director Dr. Monica Mhoja will speak.
Tuesday, June 4, 5 – 7 pm, Room 214, Vancouver Convention Center
Why Land? Strengthening Women’s Land Rights to Move the Needle on Sustainable Development
Women have played a central role in rural land management throughout history, and are major contributors to agriculture and rural economies. Despite their significant contributions, most rural women don’t have legal rights to land and resources, and are too often left out of decision-making processes that affect them. This session will discuss land and resource rights as a critical nexus for advancing progress toward multiple development goals, including poverty reduction and climate resilience. Panelists will showcase successful practices for securing indigenous and rural women’s land rights. Landesa Tanzania Program Director Dr. Monica Mhoja will speak.
Wednesday, June 5, 3 – 4 pm, Room 202-204, Vancouver Convention Center
